My mother introduced me to Vicki Barr and Cherry Ames when I was young (thanks, Mum!), and I even preferred them to the Nancy Drew series, which I also read voraciously. In this first volume, twenty-year-old Vicki becomes a flight stewardess--an exciting and demanding job that just happens to involve her in mysterious situations on a regular basis.
Yes, these books are light reading, as most children's series are. And, yes, they're rather dated. Feminist sensibilities are outraged by the restrictions on a stewardess' height, weight and marital status and by the fact that all the pilots and co-pilots are men (though the girls in the books don't seem to mind that). But a visit to the Air and Space Museum proves that's the way life was in the early days of air travel; and, if Vicki Barr and her friends seem limited by our standards, they were pioneers in a new and exciting career for women of that day. Jean Cox, one of Vicki's new best friends, is a licensed pilot herself, something Vicki achieves later in the series. Suceed in a new job, fly around the country at the drop of a hat, meet and help new people everywhere. . . these books encourage optimism and adventure.
(Warning: This series may also provoke irritation with the current state of air travel and create a longing for the days when flying was glamorous, and airline food tasted good.)
