(More customer reviews)"Attendants, Bears and Rocks" is the catalogue for the 2002 exhibition of new and recent paintings (1996-2002) by Brice Marden at the Matthew Marks Gallery in New York. Brice Marden is certainly one of the greatest living American artists, and this book does him proud. It contains a wide range of oil paintings and paint and ink drawings, all beautifully reproduced. These works all carry on the "calligraphic" style of Marden's later works with their intricate webs of lines; unlike some of his earlier series in this style, these works use very bright primary colors to wonderful effect. (The "attendants, bears and rocks" of the titles are the three separate themes of these works--they are indeed abstracts, but invoke the shapes or forms of their themes.) A brief (and unusually lucid) essay at the beginning puts these works into context, but the book is mostly just great pictures (68 large images + smaller incidental ones in the text).
A word about the format.... I'm a sucker for a beautifully-designed art book, but this one is above and beyond what I usually see. It is a large, oblong paperbound book with nice stiff covers, but is then further enclosed in a cloth-bound jacket with illustrated end-papers and a cool magnetic closure--very sharp!
