Frank Steward (ha, ha), this volume is a little bit of memoir, a little bit of advice by a seasoned veteran of the skies, but mostly a collection of stories about the life of a flight attendant. Tales of hijacking are conspicuous by their absence and security procedures are dealt with in bland admonishments to remember that it's for the traveler's good, thus instantly dating this book as pre-9/11. Talking about coach-class meal service is another dead giveaway.
It was probably funnier before last fall to read about people on planes who get sick, drunk, loopy enough to take off all their clothes in the john, or who get stuck there. Still, amid the tiresome dross (there is WAY too much vomit flying around) there are scattered gems. I was moved, for example, by the tale of a double amputee determined to see the world, and the flight attendant who quit the business but could never find his place in life. Since the book has no plot or organization it's easy to skip over the lesser parts, at least. I'd say this one is a reasonably good way to pass the time on an economy class flight.

Her stories had me laughing, in tears and relating to a world that is all too familiar with flight attendants in the airline industry. "Above the Glamour" was very entertaining and a pleasure. Jean's personality and wit came right through. Reading her book was as enjoyable as being with Jean herself.

(More customer reviews)I was skeptical at first when within the first few pages Britney Spears dies. (I don't like the use of real people in fiction...it's just a peeve of mine...) and the autor seems to jump around a lot. There are some closing lines to a few chapter that seem ill-fitting like she is trying to set a tone that doesn't exist in the rest of the writing.
However, I kept reading and really really liked the book. In fact, some of the things that annoyed me early on became ok for me because of the content of the book.
The Phoenix flu becomes a bigger deal than I knew it would, and the story gets very engrossing. I don't care that we don't find out about Mark. I think the point is that Jiselle no longer cares about that. I do wish we knew what happened to Bobby's dad.
The only thing that fails to get done is to explain the Phoenix Flu pandamonium.You go from thinking most Americans don't care about it, and are not concerned to the end of the world.
It's reminisent of recent books like "The Road", and like other classic Orwell books.
The end of the world has come in the form of a virus just as Jiselle's dreams of marriage have come true. Now she has to deal with step children, and a husband who is never home (he's a pilot) just as America is battling a crisis.
It was a really fast read, and it suprised me, which I like. I didn't realize how dramatic the book was going to be.

(More customer reviews)A very bland pictorial scrapbook of those jet-set ladies from the past. It could and should have looked much better than this haphazard collection of period company PR photos from the last few decades. There is no contents page, no captions to the photos or even page numbers to give a buyer any sense that this is any more than a quickie production which I expect will hit the mark-down section of most bookstores faster than the publisher's expected.
Despite this there are a few pages that caught my interest. Near the back of the book there are twenty or so of those upright timetables that you could pick up from travel shops years ago. Each has a smilling (naturally) stewardess, a company logo and parts of a jet on the cover.
Another reviewer has mentioned Come Fly With Us!: A Global History of the Airline Hostess which covers exactly the same subject and predictably has the same sort of soft focus posed company photos but at least it has a lot more editorial flair and an imaginative design (even though its published by Collectors Press). Stewardesses by the nature of their job are likely to be seen in most books about airlines and these two offer an interesting pictorial overview of flying: Airline Design (Designpockets) and Airline: Identity, Design and Culture. I prefer this last book to the others mentioned.

The Mile High Club: Plane Sex Stories Review

(More customer reviews)With a name like "The Mile High Club," should I expect notes on a song by Bow Wow Wow or a Liz Phair video? Knowing it's an anthology of erotic short stories, I have a few ideas: sexy stewardesses in skintight skirts, proud pilots with prodigious... pants. Of course, I could be wrong.
The anthology edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel is more than pilots and stewardesses, although they do feature in a few stories. Most of the stories involve passengers. Lavatory trysts, alluded to on the cover of the book, are pretty common, though the authors get pretty inventive. Another common method for sex in the sky involves passengers seated next to each other while covered by a common blanket. However, these illicit affairs are unneeded in a couple of stories, such as "Flights of Fancy", which features an airline devoted to sex, and "Get On, Get Off" which introduces the idea of Masturbation Class.
Getting away from the airlines, we are presented with "Bermuda Triangle" which features a female flight instructor and two male students who do everything she says. "Wing Walker" takes the idea of sex in flight to a new level, when a couple engages in activities on the top wing of a biplane. One story, "Planes, Trains, and Banana Seat Bicycles," doesn't involve sex in the skies. While it is a great story, it seems a bit out of place in this book.
All of the stories are good or great. Although they only averaged about 10 - 12 pages each, these nineteen sexy short stories only scratched the surface of the Mile High Club concept. I hope to see follow-up anthologies, because I think there is a lot of uncharted territory in this area. Maybe in the future we can read stories with helicopters. Flying boats. Dirigibles!

(More customer reviews)This book, written by Bobby Laurie, a very active blogger on various sites, including his very own. He also hosts a collaborative podcast show every week with a few other co-hosts that are also flight attendants. I have read his blog on multiple occasions, and become excited when I found out that he was publishing a book. After receiving the book and when I began to read it, I realized that this was more of a blog book; most of the book is comprised of previous blog posts, some edited for publishing. However, to his credit, there are portions of the book that are exclusive to the book only, from at least what I've seen on his posts.
While there are a few spelling and grammar mistakes throughout (understandable since this is a low-budget creation), the book brings the message across that the job of flight attendants are not as easy as it may seem. After reading the countless stories in this book, you will have a new appreciation for flight attendants, and will be aware of various aspects of your next flight, for which you were probably never aware of before.

(More customer reviews)As I started reading the back cover of "Fly Me to the Moon", I thought, "oh, okay, this is just a classic chick lit scenario". I almost put the book back on the shelf, but then something caught my attention: that the main character is a flight attendant, and to soothe her cheating-boyfriend-woes, she embarks on exotic travels around Europe. That was enough of a hook for me!
The main character, Hailey Lane, is very relatable and likeable, as are the supporting characters. While the plot is a little more unique than most chit-lit novels, it still has the same satisfying predictability that readers look for in this genre. I was hoping for a grand adventure, and while the book doesn't quite deliver as much punch as I had hoped for, it is certainly well-written and entertaining.
"Fly Me to the Moon" is a good, fun, quick read that I think all will enjoy!
Grade: B+

(More customer reviews)Back in 1967 when this book was firs published it was considered to be prettty racy stuff. My parents owned a copy but I was never allowed to read it. Finally after all these years I saw the new edition and bought it. Things certainly have changed. Rachel and Trudy were lighthearted, funny girls who got into madcap adventures that no sane flight attendent today would dare try.
Back in the 60s stews had to be single, attractive and thin, today as anyone can tell you flight attendents don't have to be any of these things. Sex seemed to be a game both men and women were playing. Today romance on the job isn't much fun at all. Back then flying was still fun. Today it's more like Dante's Inferno. Rachel & Trudy occasionally dealt with pervert passengers, and often with drunks and rotten kids but the whole phenomenon of air rage was stil unknown.
Some of the observations Rachel and Trudy made about certain types of male passengers were considered beyond the pale back in '67, today we don't even give it a second thought. Check out their comments on page 237 and you'll see what I mean. One more thing I noticed about this funny book. It couldn't be written today. The whole mind numbing political correctness movement would've made an editor cut out whole chapters. The book will make you smile and it's like a historical artifact to boot.It's a peep into a swinging lost world.

The Plane Truth by an American Airlines Flight Attendant is a daunting and insightful account of the perils that exist from the Commercial Airline aircrafts that are flying in our skies. What you don't know when you fly could kill you! "As I write these words, I can only pray that they reach every American Airlines flight attendant as well as all other commercial airline flight attendants. May you quickly wake up and realize the importance of your presence on board every aircraft we take up to the skies, because we are running out of time. Allow no one to intimidate or harass you into making compromising decisions that could allow for another catastrophic scenario at 39,000 feet needlessly costing not only your lives, but the lives of the passengers we transport on a daily basis from one destination to another. (More customer reviews)This is a fantastic book for anyone who wants to become a Flight Attendant or who has been to several Flight Attendant interviews without success.
The book opens up by giving you detailed information on how to "survive" the group interview session and gives you the secret to getting ahead of the game. The secret may shock some but I somewhat knew it all along. The secret, my friends, you'll have to read for yourselves :)
The next 3/4 of the book is dedicated solely to questions and answers. Nearly every question you think a Flight Attendant Recruiter could throw at you can now be answered with confidence. The questions and answers are very relevant and EXTREMELY helpful. I don't encourage you to try and memorize the answer; that would be dumb. But by reading the questions and their responses, you'll get an excellent flavor for how to tailor make your own responses.
The only draw back to this book is.....did anyone proof-read the book before it went to print? There are hideous grammatical errors and you can only wonder how such a fantastic book didn't make it past the editor's desk.
Oh well...the price is a little steep but well worth it if you truly have your heart set on being a Flight Attendant. Good luck!

When you are reading this book, you feel like you are right there with her along the way. This Book will literally make you laugh and cry. The book came in at the perfect time. I was having my own problems, but picked this book up, and it literally did help me. It made me realize that I am not the only person on this earth with problems, and she is just an everyday person that has helped so many people by making this book. So please, do yourself a favor and buy this book. I promise you will not be disappointed.
